What We Do

The Legislative Division of Post Audit provides auditing services to the Legislature at the direction of theLegislative Post Audit Committee,a bipartisan committee comprising five Senators and five Representatives. Our statutory authority and obligations to perform audit work for the Kansas Legislature are defined in the Legislative Post Audit Act (K.S.A. 46-1101 et. seq)and through the Legislative Post Audit Committee's formalrules.Legislative Post Audit helps evaluate whether State government agencies and programs:

  • are being run efficiently
  • are effective in accomplishing their goals
  • have adequate information technology security policies and procedures

Legislative Post Audit also contracts with public accounting firms to perform a variety of financial audits required by State or federal law. These audits cover the State's accounting system and certain State agencies.

Who Can Request An Audit

By law, individual legislators, legislative committees, or the Governor may request an audit, but any audit work conducted by the Division must be approved by the Legislative Post Audit Committee. Any legislator who would like to request an audit should contact the Division directly at (785) 296-3792. Ask for, or simply email,Justin Stowe. Once we help you develop an audit request, it will be considered by theLegislative Post Audit Committeefor approval. Several times a year, our Committee approves three to four audits at a time from a list of about thirty topics.

Open Records Information

The Kansas Open Records Act (K.S.A. 45-220) requires that each agency make available basic information related to the records it possesses and its prescribed procedures for gaining access to those records open to the public. This brief document contains that information.
